SAVANNA The Savanna distillery is one of only three on the island of La Reunion, a French departement in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar near Mauritius. Designed and built by Emile Hugot between 1948 and 1950, Distillerie de Savanna was once located in the Saint-Paul town, but was transferred in 1992 to new premises in Bois-Rouges, next to the Bois-Rouge sugar refinery and power station, enabling the company to modernise its production facilities and achieve massive economies of scale.

As well as selling in bulk to customers throughout its locale and across Europe, the distillery markets three main types of rum itself: a traditional molasses-based spirit called ‘Savanna Intense’; an agricole called Savanna Creol; and a third, more unusual high-ester (‘Grand Arome’) rum called Savanna Lontan. Aged expressions of the Intense are known as Cap Savanna. The range, at the time of writing, has received 17 medals and commendations from international spirits fairs in 2007 alone, including a Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2007 for the Savanna Intense 55%.
